Will EV Charging Get Easier by 2030? (August 18)
Will EV Charging Become More Convenient as Infrastructure Doubles?

Over the next five years, the number of charging facilities nationwide will grow from roughly 23 million today to more than 40 million — a doubling that will make EV charging noticeably more convenient.
I. Doubling scale to support more than 110 million EVs
Total doubling: The 15th Five-Year Plan for Building a New-Type Power System specifies that by 2030 the total number of charging facilities nationwide will exceed 40 million, nearly doubling from about 20.09 million at the end of 2025.
High-power additions: About 300,000 high-power charging facilities will be deployed in parallel, providing charging services capable of supporting more than 110 million EVs.
Grid investment backing: Fixed-asset investment in the national power grid during the 15th Five-Year Plan period will exceed 5 trillion yuan, providing financial support for charging network construction.
II. Denser coverage across cities, rural areas and highways
Urban coverage: Pilot programs for “unified construction and management” of residential charging piles will be advanced, and parking lots will gradually achieve full coverage, easing the difficulty of installing piles in residential communities.
Highway corridors: Charging facilities at highway service areas will be renovated and upgraded to build an intercity charging network for mid- and long-distance travel, helping ease holiday charging queues.
Rural coverage: Except for islands and high-altitude, high-cold regions, public charging facilities in rural counties and townships will achieve full coverage.
III. Better experience: charging moves toward “minute-level”
Higher fast-charging share: The plan calls for raising the share of fast-charging facilities. Technologies such as BYD's 1,500 kW flash-charging piles and Huawei's 600 kW ultra-fast chargers are spreading rapidly, cutting charging time from “an hour” to “a few minutes.”
Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) rollout: By 2030, the aggregated adjustable capacity of vehicle-to-grid interaction will reach 50 million kW. EVs will not only charge but also feed power back to the grid, acting as “mobile power banks.”
More standardized pricing: Charging station environments will be improved, fee signage will be clearer, and caps will be set on public charging service fees — putting an end to “charging rip-offs.”
