On March 11, 2024, China completed the first sea export transportation of large-scale solid-state hydrogen storage equipment in the hydrogen-charged state in Shanghai Waigaoqiao Port Area. The destination is Malaysia, which is an overseas commercial order and will be used for local hydrogen energy application projects. It is estimated that the relevant hydrogen transportation scale will be about 500 tons in 2026. The magnesium-based solid-state hydrogen storage equipment transported this time adopts independent research and development technology, which can safely store and transport hydrogen at normal temperature and pressure, with a hydrogen storage capacity of 1 ton in a single tank and a cycle life of more than 3000 times, effectively overcoming the bottleneck of high cost and strict safety requirements of traditional liquefaction or high-pressure storage and transportation methods. In response to the challenge of the lack of international precedents for the maritime transportation of large-scale hydrogen-charged equipment, the Maritime Safety Administration of the Ministry of Transport instructed Shanghai and Liaoning Maritime Safety Administration to organize experts to carry out full-chain technical evaluation, provide guidance for enterprises on loading and unloading and transportation guarantee schemes, and open up a green channel for government services, and provide technical support at the loading site to ensure the safe and smooth shipment of equipment. The successful transportation expands the application scenarios of hydrogen energy storage and transportation, and provides innovative practices for promoting the extension of the hydrogen energy industry chain and international cooperation in green and low-carbon technologies.
